What is Sensory Play?

Simply put, sensory play is a form of playtime that encourages the use and stimulation of a child’s senses; touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell. This play usually includes toys and activities that are specially designed to promote independent movement, balance control, muscle growth, and spatial awareness. Because a child’s brain and physical senses are not fully developed after birth, sensory play can be especially beneficial for strengthening the connections between their mind and body. Simply put, Sensory play encourages learning through exploration, curiosity, problem solving and creativity. It helps to build nerve connections in the brain and encourages the development of language and motor skills.

At SensorStory we use Montessori sensorial materials for our little SensorBabies to “work on”. The sensorial activities in a Montessori setting focuses on helping to develop the five senses to help them classify and understand the world around them. The sensorial materials provide the child with sensory-motor activities which have been systematically planned for the five senses and so permit the child to form new concepts through experience.

Why Sensorial Work is Important

Maria Montessori belived that we can trust our children from birth to age 6 are sensorial explorers

Benefits of sensory play:

  • Creates order and clarity in the child’s world;

  • Can assist adults in the early detection of defects in the function of a child’s senses.

 

Sensory Skills: Children begin to understand and refine their senses from birth to age six. This period of sensitivity can be characterised by a child’s fascination with sensorial experiences such as touch, taste, sight and smell. The first phase of sensory awareness, sensitivity to small objects, occurs from one to three years of age. This period can be characterised by a child’s fixation with small objects and tiny details. The completion of this phase indicates that an understanding of order and detail are coming together in the child’s mind. The second sensitivity phase, sensorial exploration and classification, occurs from 2.5 to 6 years. This phase can be classified by an intense desire to take part in learning experiences that integrate the senses. These experiences provide children with a system to classify objects within their environment.

Sensorial activities are used in Montessori to help children in discrimination and order. They also help broaden and refine a child’s senses. When a child combines Montessori designed materials with sensorial work, it helps them become more logical, perceptive, and aware.

Dr. Montessori believed that sensorial experiences begin at birth and recognized that the senses play a fundamental role in the development of a child’s intellect.  She created the Sensorial area to aid children in the development of their reasoning skills and to stimulate their growing intellect.  Where Practical Life helps children to acquire skills needed to physically control the objects in their environment, the Sensorial area adds a more cognitive component as children now begin to bring order to those objects.

 Unlike the material used for Practical Life, this material has either never been seen or never been used by the child in his everyday life.  Sensorial material is not something children have preconceived notions about, but is rather something “new” for teachers to introduce.  Accordingly, the material is carefully presented in a specific way or in a specific pattern: the child learns to match the similar things, then he is shown how to grade the material based on its quality, and then he receives the language related to his work.

Sensorial materials were designed according to similar principles:

  1. They isolate one quality that is to be worked with.
  2. They have a ‘control of error’ that allows children to make the corrections themselves.
  3. They are simple in appearance and esthetically pleasing.  This is intended to attract attention to the objects and allow children to manipulate the materials with ease.
  4. They must, by design, be ‘complete.’  A child who is working with sensorial material must be able to ‘complete’ the lesson without having to stop and find a missing piece.
  5. They are limited (in multiple senses of the word).  Sensorial materials are limited in that there is only one of each lesson in the environment and limited in that not all of one quality or piece of information is given to the child.  The child is not given every color in the world, but only a select few. This gives the child the keys to the information so it peaks his curiosity and leads him to learn more out of his own interest.
  6. They are all what Dr. Montessori referred to as “materialized abstractions.”  Each material clearly and concretely demonstrates abstract mathematical concepts, such as diameter, height, width, length, area, and volume and are often organized according to a base-10 system that will be further explored in the Mathematics area.

 

The Sensorial area is Montessori’s home to exercises in perception, observation, fine discrimination, and classification that play a major role in helping children to develop logic and concentration.

  1. Visual work– As the name suggests, the purpose of visual work is to help children categorize and notice the similarities and differences in objects they see. It includes discrimination to dimension (size, length, width, and breadth of objects), color (color awareness), and form (shape awareness). Activities included are:

      1. Tactile work- It focuses on enhancing the sense of touch to heighten their perception and understanding of the world around them. The purpose of tactile work is to help children develop the ability to discriminate between coarse and fine when they touch. Activities included are:
    • Baric work- It aims to help children learn about pressure and weight. It helps them to understand the objects around them and think critically. Activities included are Baric tablets.
    • Thermic work- The thermic activity aims to help children distinguish between temperatures and develop their sense of temperature. It includes hot and cold, warm and cool, and the relationship with the temperature of the child’s own body. Activities included are:
      1. Auditory work- As the name suggests, this work helps a child in improving their sense of hearing. It helps children to differentiate between distinct sounds and heightens their ability to notice variations in sound. Activities included are:
      • Montessori bells, and
      • Sound cylinders.
      • 6 Olfactory work- The purpose of olfactory work is to develop the children’s sense of smell. It helps them to differentiate between distinct smells. Activities included are: smelling bottles.
      • 7 Gustatory work- It aims to help children explore their sense of taste (Is it sour, bitter, or sweet?). In these exercises, a child will learn to differentiate between a variety of food and taste. Activities included are:
        1. Stereognostic work – It is also known as tactile gnosis, the sixth sense, or muscle memory. The purpose of stereognosis work is to develop the tactile or the sixth sense by using a sense of touch. It helps a child increase the ability to recognize or characterize an object without using sight, sound, smell, or taste. Activities included are:

Throughout the Montessori curriculum, multiple sensorial activities focus on descriptive language, recognizing, observing, categorizing, and matching patterns, etc. It not only helps a child improve their senses but also helps them to become independent and confident.

These tables are great for helping children explore their world through the five senses of sight, sound, touch, hearing, and sense of taste. It is amazing what children will discover that they can do with these sensory tables.

  • You can also use those, as mentioned earlier, Montessori sensorial activities and incorporate them along with the regular activities prepared at home. For example, if a child is learning food preparation, you can add gustatory activities. If a child is learning to recognize objects, put miniature objects into a bag, make it a mystery bag, and ask them to put their hand in the bag and pick one object and ask them to guess the object they are holding, and so on.

  • Each of the Montessori sensorial play activities is easy to set up at home and is also fun. These activities allow children to identify objects with their senses while learning new ideas.
